OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

OBJECTIVES
In response to the national policy on sustainable development and public demand for hazards mitigation, the Department of Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design aims to cultivate students with skills required in civil engineering and hazard mitigation design.
The Department of Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design is student oriented. Students not only pursue professional knowledge but also develop good manners and living habits.

The Department of Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design includes three major fields-Earthquake Resistant Structure and Structural Reinforcement, Slope Stabilization and Water and Soil Conservation, and Construction safety. The Department of Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design emphasizes the importance of theoretical study and practical application equally. Students learn by doing and thus develop their potential in analyzing and organization, and establish the capability of independent study.
Furthermore, to reduce the impact of Taiwan joining the WTO, students are encouraged to improve their language ability by taking courses such as Engineering English and Japanese to increase their competitiveness in the job market.

GOALS
The graduates of the Department of Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design should possess the following core competencies:

  • The ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering;
  • The ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;
  • The ability to use techniques, skills, and tools necessary for engineering practices;
  • The ability to design an engineering system, component, or process;
  • The ability to communicate effectively and function in a team;
  • The ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems;
  • The knowledge of contemporary issues; an understanding of the impact of engineering solutions in environmental, societal, and global contexts; and the ability to cultivate habits of life-long learning;
  • The understanding of professional ethics and social responsibility.

COURSE PLANNING

The curriculum of the Department of Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design emphasizes basic courses of the civil engineering and hazards mitigation in each phase of engineering planning, design, construction and maintaining. Various remedial technologies are included in the curriculum. Meanwhile, the research center for structural safety conducts many research projects. Students are encouraged to participate and can learn theory and obtain practical experience.

FACULTY AND FACILITIES

FACULTY
The faculty consists of one professor, eight associate professors, three assistant professors and four lecturers. All faculty members have strong theoretical discipline and practical experience in their individual fields.

FACILITIES
Currently the Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design Department has seven laboratories and one research center, namely: the material test lab, soil mechanics lab, structure reinforcement and detection lab, survey instrument room, vegetation engineering lab, engineering project management lab, construction management computer room and structure safety and hazard mitigation research center.

CAREERS AND PLACEMENTS

The graduates of the Department of Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design will be able to engage the following work:

  • Field construction work,
  • Survey work,
  • Soil testing work,
  • Site investigation work,
  • Architectural work,
  • Site monitoring work, and
  • Government work.

INDUSTRY-ACADEMY COOPERATION

Faculty members are active in research projects funded by government agencies and cooperative projects commissioned by the industry. Students are encouraged to participate in these projects to obtain practical experience.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

Our undergraduate program received the approval of accreditation from IEET in 2007. In response to the trend of sustainable development, the Department has been collaborating with its Structure Safety and Hazard Mitigation Research Center and the Graduate Institute of Civil Engineering and Hazard Mitigation Design. The Department is developing a Humanistic and Technology Integration Department as well as a department providing community services for the structure safety of areas affected by earthquakes.

Modification and innovation of our undergraduate and graduate program will be continuously made to adapt to the needs of engineering profession. The department will keep assisting the governmental offices and related industries by providing expert opinions and services.
